Today on 9th December 2025, Tata Motors is finally launching the petrol versions of Harrier and Safari! Yes, after waiting for so many years, we are getting proper petrol engines in these big SUVs. No more only diesel option. Both cars will come with a new 1.5-litre TGDI turbo-petrol engine that Tata had shown us at Auto Expo 2023. I still remember the concept looked so cool back then.

Same Engine Coming in Sierra Too
By the way, this same 1.5-litre petrol engine will also be used in the upcoming Tata Sierra that is coming on 25th November (wait, I think the date is 2026 now? Anyway, very soon). So basically Tata is making one strong petrol engine for all its big SUVs.
Who Are Their Rivals?
In the market, Safari fights with cars like Mahindra XUV700, MG Hector Plus and Hyundai Alcazar. And Harrier competes with MG Hector, Jeep Compass and sometimes even XUV700 5-seater. Now with petrol option, more people will think about buying them because many people just don’t want diesel anymore.
Price (Expected)
Good news – petrol Harrier and Safari will be cheaper than the diesel ones! Right now diesel Safari costs between ₹14.66 lakh to ₹25.96 lakh (ex-showroom I think), and diesel Harrier is ₹14 lakh to ₹25.25 lakh. Petrol versions should start a little lower because petrol engine is new and maybe slightly less powerful on paper.

Current Diesel Engine Specs (Just for Comparison)
Right now both cars use the same 2.0-litre diesel engine:
- Power – 170 PS
- Torque – 350 Nm
- Gearbox – 6-speed manual or 6-speed automatic
Mileage (ARAI claimed):
Harrier → 16.8 kmpl (MT), 14.6 kmpl (AT)
Safari → 16.3 kmpl (MT), 14.5 kmpl (AT)
Petrol mileage we will know only after launch, but I guess it will be close or maybe slightly better in city.
Safety Features – Still Loaded!
No compromise on safety. Both Harrier and Safari already have:

- 5-star safety rating (Global NCAP)
- Level-2 ADAS (super useful on highways)
- 360-degree camera
- Features like – adaptive cruise control, lane keep assist, automatic emergency braking, forward collision warning, high beam assist, etc.
So even the petrol versions will get all these things, I am 100% sure.
Final Thoughts
Honestly, I am very excited for this launch. Many of my friends were waiting for petrol Harrier/Safari because diesel is noisy and not everyone wants to deal with it in city traffic. Now finally the wait is over. Let’s see the exact prices and new features today evening. Will update you guys once official prices are out!
What do you think – will you buy petrol Harrier/Safari or still prefer diesel? Comment down! 😊
